Primary Curriculum

EYFS_2
We follow the National Curriculum, which has been the basis for education for schools in England and Wales since 1988. It is followed by over 25,000 schools and around 10 million children in the UK, drawing on everything that the UK has discovered about teaching and learning from a long and rich educational history. It is the largest and most widely followed English language curriculum in the world.

Detailed programmes of study, taking children through from early years right up to pre-university study, cover four key stages of education. Parents can be confident that the core of the work their children are covering in Shanghai has been created, refined and tested by many thousands of pupils and schools. Textbooks, revision guides, internet resource materials, standardised tests and many other resources are easily available to students, teachers and parents.

As an international school, we are able to adjust our curriculum to make sure that it meets the needs of our community. In most cases we follow the British National Curriculum closely, but we place an increased emphasis on global and international issues rather than domestic ones and on the learning of Mandarin Chinese as well as European languages.

We also have an extended programme for students whose first language is not English, to ensure that they can have full access to the curriculum.

The programmes for Early Years, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 are for children aged between 2 and 11. These are described in this section of our website. The programme for secondary education, for students aged 11 and over, consists of three more stages: Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and the IB Diploma programme. These are explained in our Secondary Curriclum pages.
