Karachiwala

Rumana Husain, author of an important book from Pakistan, the highly researched and illustrated coffee-table book 'Karachiwala: a subcontinent within a city' made a slide presentation about her book to the IB students of BISS on Wednesday 20th October at the Puxi campus.

Husain's talk began with a brief history of the city of her birth, Karachi - a large metropolis of 18 million people, where she lives and works as an educator, a children's writer and illustrator, a free-lance journalist, an art critic, as well as Senior Editor of an international art biannual published from Karachi. Her talk was illustrated with more than fifty images from 'Karachiwala…' which has over 500 images spread on 330 pages. The book documents the diversity within this largest city of Pakistan, and Husain elaborated upon the origins, lifestyles, customs and traditions of the different ethnic and religious communities living in it.

Husain answered students' questions relating to the city's demographics and politics, and some others regarding the over sixty families/communities included in the book. She then presented a copy of her book for the school's library.

Author, Rumana Husain, came to speak to IB students about Karachi, Pakistan and her book.
