National History Day

The nation being referred to in ‘National History Day’ is the USA, and so this is a competition which the American schools are familiar with.

This was however the first event for Junior students (that is those in years 7-9) in Shanghai. The event took place at Concordia International School in Pudong on 2 April and was attended by over 100 students. The three categories in the competition were dramatic performance, websites and documentary film.

We had two students competing - Simoni Handoo and Henrikka Jarvinen. They had written a short play about Field Marshall Haig which they entered in the dramatic performance category. The play looked at the extent to which Field Marshall Haig deserved his reputation as ‘Butcher of the Somme’. They overcame difficulties resulting from other students being unable to attend and cleverly adapted their play so that it could be performed by just two students. Their efforts were recognised as they were awarded an ‘oustanding’ for their performance. This was an enjoyable day and it was good for the students to be involved in this well-organised inaugural event.
