An Animated Exhibition

On Friday 21 October Year 5 classes visited the '25 years of Pixar' Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in central Shanghai.

Year 5 have been studying film narratives in their Literacy lessons and this was an excellent opportunity for them to see how a film is put together.

They learnt that an animated movie can take up to five years to produce and saw that there is a whole army of people involved in bringing these films to the big screen. Models of all our favourite characters were there and examples of rough sketches from the artists and initial ideas. There were clear explanations as to how a character has to be fully rounded with emotions and feelings in order for him to be believable.

The highlight of the day was the voyage through the artist’s studio board which showed how the setting of a film was crucial and that the producers needed to use animation to create their fantasy worlds. Year 5 clearly enjoyed their day and enriched their learning by making connections to the real world of animation.
