International Week

This year we celebrated International Week at the Secondary Campus with the theme of '7 Billion People' to mark the phenomenal growth of humans on this planet.

As a school dedicated to nurturing our students as global citizens of the future we thought that this would be a timely way to look at how humans have made an impact on this world and the problems (and their solutions) that may arise in the future.

Each faculty or department delivered lessons on this theme to years 7, 8 and 9. In science we looked at the pollution of the oceans while in history and geography the students saw how population growth and industrialisation have affected working conditions both for children and adults. The theme of 7 billion gave ample scope for the maths faculty to look at how large numbers can be represented in ways that are tangible to young minds and there has been some brilliant display work by students as a result! In the Quad work goes on with the year 8 students’ representation of the Tree of Life and their own place in the world, as represented by their different nationalities. ICT and World Languages complemented all of the above by allowing students to research their own and other languages and countries, again producing some wonderful display work.

There was a House Tug-of – War competition in the middle of the week, which Chang Cheng won, and we rounded the week off with students coming in National Dress on Friday to celebrate their national identities. Many of them joined the parade at the primary campusin the morning and this was followed at break by a bring - and - buy International Finger Food event. This, together with the contributions for wearing non-uniform, raised in excess of 3500 Yuan for our preferred charity, the Spring Bud Appeal. This will be added to the money that we raise at the Christmas Fayre.

All in all it was a fun but educational week with memories that the students will take with them as they grow up to be ‘global citizens of the future’. Finally, many thanks to all the parents who helped with costumes and the finger food on Friday; your support on these days of celebration is much appreciated.

Secondary school students join in the International Week Parade displaying national costumes to the delighted audience of parents.
